Description
U.S. Remington Mark III Flare Signal Pistol.
•Mechanism: Single-shot, breech-loading, break-top action activated by an under-barrel latch or lever.
•Caliber: Built to fire 10-gauge visual flare cartridges.
•Barrel: Characterized by its long, distinct 9-inch smoothbore steel barrel.
•Frame: Features a distinctive spur-style trigger and curved, two-piece wooden grip panels.
•Production: Roughly 24,500 units were produced at Remington’s Bridgeport, Connecticut factory between 1915 and 1918.
Finding the true serial number hidden inside the frame frame or under the grip panels is incredibly common for this model. Remington frequently stamped the full contract number (15-714) internally to keep the exterior frame smooth, using only short two-digit assembly matches (like the 15-90 and B31 found outside) to quickly align the parts on the factory floor.
Since all three sets of numbers found (see pics) are consistent with factory hand-stamping methods, this pistol is a highly authentic, un-tampered specimen from World War I.
Because Remington manufactured these rapidly between 1915 & 1918 a low serial number like 1590 places its manufacture early in the production run likely around late 1915 or early 1916.
This pistol exhibits a heavy dark patina, surface pitting, and oxidation across the barrel and frame components. Some remaining black paint or finish is chipping away along the receiver block, consistent with long-term exposure or poor storage conditions.
The barrel does slightly wobble from the frame and where the barrel matches to the frame (hammer end) there is a slight gap (see pic).
Lanyard keep is missing, and there are some chips in the wooden grips (see pic). The price reflects all these matters.
As found condition, opens / closes / fires as should. For being 110-yrs old, it’s an amazing survivor.
This is not a museum quality pistol. This is a pistol for an entry level / starting a collection.
