Description
U.S. World War II M2 Pyrotechnic Pistol.
It is a military-issue flare gun manufactured by the International Flare-Signal Co. of Tippecanoe City, Ohio.
Key Features & Design
•Construction: Made of solid bronze/brass, which helped it withstand harsh environments and reduce rusting in naval or aviation settings.
•Operation: Unlike standard break-open flare guns, this unique design is muzzle-loaded. The rim of a 37mm rimless flare cartridge slips under the spring-loaded brass latch on the left side to hold it in place.
•Mechanics: It utilizes a double-action trigger and features a distinctive grip safety lever on the back of the handle.
•Markings: The barrel is stamped with PISTOL, PYROTECHNIC-M2, a serial number, military inspection markings (INSP. F.A.M.), and U.S. PROPERTY. The checkered black bakelite grip panels display the company’s winged shield logo, Driggs-Faber System branding, and original patent number.
•The U.S. Navy / Coast Guard Mark: Between the U.S. and PROPERTY stamps, there is a lightly struck acceptance mark. On Navy-issued variants, this is typically a tiny anchor.
•The U.S. Navy requisitioned roughly 20,000 of these brass pistols from the Army to issue to its personnel.
•The “F.A.M.” Inspector Stamp: which stands for F.A. Massey, a Springfield Armory sub-inspector who approved ordnance equipment for wide-scale deployment across multiple branches, including naval procurement.
This flare gun was manufactured during World War Il, specifically between 1942 and 1944.
