SPSh-44 (or VZ-44) 26.5mm break-top military signal flare pistol.
•Origin & Design: Originally designed by Georgi Shpagin in the Soviet Union during World War II, this robust smooth-bore pistol became the standard Red Army signaling tool starting in 1944.
•Features: It features a heavy steel break-action frame, a single-action external hammer, a bottom lanyard ring loop, and distinctive contoured wood grip panels.
This flare pistol is from the World War II and Cold War eras.
•The model was designed in 1944 by Soviet firearms designer Georgy Shpagin to replace the older, more complex SPSh-42. It saw immediate frontline service with the Soviet Red Army during the final years of World War II.
Features the distinct Soviet star-in-shield arsenal proof mark.
The five-pointed star contained within a shield serves as an official arsenal stamp.
This specific variation belongs to the Molot Arsenal (Factory No. 356) located in Vyatskiye Polyany (formerly Molotov). Shpagin was based there during the mass production of these pistols starting in 1944.
Early wartime and immediately post-WWII production runs from this facility featured these minimal markings alongside distinct wooden grips.
As found, Opens / Closes, when you pull the hammer back it clock and tries to stay in-place but as soon as you let go it slams closed and would
fire.
This is not museum quality piece, it is a start to a collection piece. Normal wear, dings and dents. 1-small chip in the lower left oof the right-side wood grip (see pic).
