Axial Balance Compass
Maritime Axial Compass In Wooden Case.
The wood box with handle is 11” square x 6 1/2” tall x 1/2” wall thickness (wood box walls).
The top just lifts off the box, there isn’t any hardware beside the handle to keep the top / bottom connected.
This compass is dated June 1st 1875

The compass is a dry compass, it does still work and points true north as the box is turned in any direction.
The compass is mounted in the box with brass mounts, swinging easily.
Solid brass body.
The diameter of the glass is 7”
Compass diameter is 8 1/4”
Overall diameter is 9 1/2”
17.8 lbs including the wood box
There is a crack in the glass as you can see in the pics, this is the only D. BAKER BOSTON compass that we have seen that is this early dated 1875
