Description
Civil War-era U.S. Army Model 1862 Signal Pistol / Flare Gun.
This specific model was designed to fire colored signal flares, such as red, green, or white, which were essential for long-distance communication between ground troops and ships during the American Civil War.
•Material: The pistol is constructed from heavy brass with walnut wood grips.
•Design: It features a single, large-bore barrel and a spur trigger (a trigger without a traditional trigger guard).
•Condition: The brass frame has a naturally developing mustard” patina, the wood grips are walnut and in un-repaired condition.
•There is a 1” crack on the upper right-hand top of the left grip. The walnut grips have a beautiful lacquer finish.
•The internal locking mechanism / spring is broken therefore the hammer cocks but does not stay in place as should, thus the pricing is reflective.
•Typical brass wear on a pistol of this age, small casting flaw at the end of the frame (see pic) small scratches, blemishes & dings (see pics).
This is Extremely Rare! These were originally manufactured in 1882 for the US Navy with an estimated production of just 100 ever made. Small amounts were also made by British firm Dyer & Robson, Greenwich using a similar pattern and design. This is a very early serial number 9 (matching barrel & frame).
There no signs of proof marks on this gun thus the price is reflective.
The model 1882 pattern was also the first flare pistol known to have been used by the British.
This most unusual pistol has a barrel that can swivel 360 degrees. The idea being that a cartridge can be inserted at either end, fired, barrel swivelled and then a new round loaded from the other end extracting the first spent cartridge. A very unique and rare pistol. You are unlikely to see another.
