Molins version of the No. 1 Mk. 5

flare pistol

A type of flare gun used extensively during World War II.

•Design: It features a distinctive bell muzzle (the flared end of the barrel) and a 1-inch bore.

•Grips: Typically equipped with checkered black plastic or bakelite grips.

•Action: It is a single-shot, break-action pistol with a heavy hammer and a lanyard ring at the base of the grip.

•Proof Mark, Crown over B Proof for Guns Which are only tested once (see pic).

These signal pistols followed the design of the classic WWI-era brass Webley & Scott Mk III flare pistols. During WWII, they were issued to various British and Commonwealth forces, including the RAF and armored fighting vehicle (AFV) crews, for communication and signaling.

The Molins version of the No. 1 Mk. 5 flare pistol is a classic example of World War II-era “war finish” production. While the design is often associated with Webley & Scott, Molins (a company that primarily made cigarette-making machinery) was one of the major wartime contractors.

•Manufacturer Markings: Look for the code M601 stamped on the hammer or frame (see pic).  This was the specific wartime code assigned to manufacturers like I.L. Berridge & Co., which produced these for Molins.

•Construction: Unlike earlier brass flare guns, the Molins model is made of sheet steel with a black finish.

•Belled Muzzle: The flared muzzle on your No. 1 is distinctive and was intended to ensure the flare cleared the muzzle cleanly.

Works as should, broken / missing piece on the left-side bottom of grip (see pic), hole in the right-side grip (see pic).  Typical wear, scratches, missing paint, on this WW2 era pistol.

No dents, typical small dinging.
